Keynote speakers
Professor Emer Rogan
Prof. Emer Rogan is a lecturer in Zoology at University College Cork, who's research focuses on marine mammal biology, abundance and distribution, trophic ecology, conservation and ecosystem health. Her work examines interactions between marine mammals, fisheries, and environmental variability, advocating for ecosystem-based fisheries management. With a background in plankton ecology, she has contributed to understanding marine ecosystem functioning and has long experience in small cetacean strandings and postmortem studies.
Dr Lori Schwacke
Dr Lori Schwacke is the Scientific Program Director for the U.S. Marine Mammal Commission, who has focused her research career on understanding how environmental changes influence marine mammal health and population status. With her strong foundation in statistics and epidemiology, her research specifically focuses on development of models to understand and quantify impacts of pollution and other anthropogenic stressors on marine mammal populations. She led the assessment of injuries to marine mammals following the catastrophic Deepwater Horizon oil spill, and her team's research delivered the first direct evidence of oil-associated health impacts on cetaceans, leading to long-term consequences for many populations.
