European Research on Cetaceans

The presentations of the annual ECS conference are published under the title European Research on Cetaceans. From 2005 onwards, the ECS members are provided with an extensive abstract book (in print) at the start of the Annual Conference. All submissions to the Annual Conference, including posters, presentations and movies if possible, are provided on CD. The submissions to the La Rochelle (France) 2005 ECS conference have been published and distributed among the ECS members on CD. The Gdynia (Poland) 2006 and all further Proceedings are produced as a true CD version, just as the La Rochelle version.

From 1987 - 2004 the ECS published European Research on Cetaceans in a printed format. This was a sciencifically edited but not peer-reviewed publication based on material provided and presented at the annual conferences. The past issues provide members with a wealth of detailed research information. Several issues have run out of stock, but most recent issues can still be ordered (also by non-members). The following proceedings have been published in paper:

No. 15 Rome (Italy), 2001, No. 14 Cork (Ireland), 2000, No. 13 Valencia (Spain), 1999, No. 12 Monaco, 1998, No. 11 Stralsund (Germany), 1997, No. 10 Lisbon (Portugal), 1996, No. 9 Lugano (Switzerland), 1995, No. 8 Montpellier (France), 1994, No. 7 Inverness (Scotland), 1993, No. 6 San Remo (Italy), 1992, No. 5 Sandefjord (Norway), 1991, No. 4 Palma de Mallorca (Spain), 1990, No. 3 La Rochelle (France), 1989, No. 2 Troia (Portugal), 1988, No. 1 Hirtshals (Denmark), 1987.

ECS News

An e-mail news service provides relevant information about the Society to ECS-members (the ECS mailing list for member only). For both members and non-members news is also provided through opt-in mailing lists (ECS-Talk, ECS-Students). Those mailing lists are also open to other relevant news on marine mammals.

Special Publication Series

The 'ECS Special Publication Series' publishes the Proceedings of Workshops held on topics of particular interest. Recent ones are, as an example:

  • Cetacean Pathology: Dissection Techniques and Tissue Sampling,
  • Methods of Study of Bottlenose Dolphins in the Wild,
  • Diagnosis of By-Catch in Cetaceans,
  • Protected Areas of Cetaceans,
  • Collisions between Cetaceans and Vessels: can we find Solutions?,
  • The Use of Controlled Exposure Experiments to Investigate the Effects of Noise on Marine Mammals: Scientific, Methodological, and Practical Considerations,
  • Active Sonar and Cetaceans,
  • Biscay Cetacean Research and Conservation,
  • Estimation of G(0) in Line-Transect Surveys of Cetaceans,
  • Common Dolphins: Current Research, Threats and Issues,
  • Static Acoustic Monitoring of Cetaceans.

The ECS used to publish a (printed) Newsletter, generally two times a year for members, reporting current research in Europe, recent publications and abstracts, working group activities, conservation issues, legislation and regional agreements, local news, and cetacean news from around the world. The ECS produced generic Newsletters in print from 1987 until 2002. Several issues have run out of stock, but most recent issues can still be ordered (also by non-members). Emphasis was then placed on Workshops proceddings and published as more substantial Special Issues of the Newsletter. Since being not a real newsletter, the last of these was Special Issue #46, published 2006: the Proceedings of the Workshop on "Static Acoustic Monitoring of Cetaceans".
